How to write the First Sentence of a Book Report

Do you have a book report to write, and have no idea about how to start? Don’t worry. Relax! There are numerous ways using which you can grab the attention of your audience. One of those very important ways is by creating an intriguing introductory sentence.

You might choose to begin the essay with a question which would hook the reader’s interest and make him  read the book report till the last page. Or, you can also go for a sentence which gives a hint to the reader about what the book talks about.

Following are some of the ways you can start the book report with and hook your reader’s attention as well:

1.    Beginning with a question

Starting the book report with a question is a good way to grab the reader’s attention. Some of the sentences you can use are as follows:

•    Do you like a good mystery?
•    Are you afraid of the dark?
•    Are you a believer of happy endings?
•    Do you have a real life hero?

2.    A fact about the time of the story or the author’s life

If you are discussing a book written by a well-known author you can start with a popular fact which would grab the reader’s attention instantly. This could be a fact related to the era of the author when he was alive and how the times influenced the author’s writing. For example:

"Mark Twain spent much of his childhood on the banks of the Mississippi River, so it is little wonder that his greatest works took place on and around that famous waterway."

It is very simple and easy to find a fact which interests the reader and makes them get hooked on to reading your entire report. You should also remember to include the biography in the bibliography of your book report!
