The Supervisor’s Role in Writing Ph.D. Research Proposals

The person who usually applies for a Ph.D. program is someone who has got curiosity but also has the stamina to face difficult times and situations in his/her research project. Also, it requires a lot of dedication, passion for study, for independent work and a will and motivation to conclude and honour his/her research.

There are two most important things said to have for Ph.D. research proposals 1) selecting the topic in a specific field of study 2) choosing your supervisor. It is indispensable to choose the topic you are passionate and motivated about, research on something you find interesting, as you would be working on it over a significant period of time.

As for the choice for a supervisor, select someone with expertise who would make things really interesting and easy for you. This is the point where students find themselves in a greater pain because usually, they don’t evaluate their expertise and skill level before appointing them. Obviously, there cannot be perfect match for most of the students but choosing a supervisors wisely can possibly turn things around for you.

Once you have defined your area of study and a definite topic in your mind, the next crucial step is organizing your research proposal. A thesis or dissertation has standard operating procedures for most of the topics and the whole industry has accepted it with good faith but when it comes down to research proposals, there is no set procedure or a template to follow. The supervisor would assist you in selecting the final topic till the end of the research because with years of experience and having a true hindsight, he/she knows what research committee or board expect from the students.

For example, a typical proposal in humanities would be anything from 1000 words or perhaps up to 2000 words but what is important is that you have a bibliography , you outline your aim and objectives and declare your stance in full swing that, what are you going to be doing in your research proposal. The committee usually evaluates Ph.D. students on the projected outcomes of the proposal, how it would be beneficial for the relevant discipline, how it would cater to the diverse interests of the people and other similar things.

So, your supervisor would be a key to your proposal’s overwhelming success. A supervisor has to play a significant role in deciding the fate of the students because their successful assistance may result in students acquiring positions in the university with scoring high-grades in their research proposals.
