Don’t Worry! Writing a Bad Dissertation Draft Is the First Step Towards Improvement
You know what the head of the doctoral research committee said when I acquainted him a couple of days ago? He said, “A poorly written dissertation draft is the first step towards improving and excelling in your Ph.D. research.”
I was surprised to hear that as I couldn’t comprehend it right away. Then he explained that great examples are rarely seen and those who are able to construct their research perfectly, use rigorous logic, have unique insights, conduct groundbreaking research and have a touch of artistry.
Having decades of experience, he further shared some of the key insights about what makes a research dissertation loose its charm. The most common mistakes Ph.D. researchers do are:
Surrounding Yourself With Like-Minded People
If you're
surrounded by people who think the same way you do, perceive things how you
perceive them, share their views whether conservative or liberal or/and have a similar perspective, you will encounter little
resistance as you write down your research. You might also face difficulties in
tackling the issues and challenges that would come forth. A proposed research
must be open for all, for the entire world, and should extend beyond your
university clutter.
Choosing a Topic That Intrigues You
Choosing a fresh/recent dissertation topic and current subject matters make things interesting for the researchers as well as for the readers. You need to shortlist those topics that are both relevant and interesting for you to conduct your research. Once you’re able to get your desired topic approved by the research panel, you would be able to execute it well too.
Keeping a Topic Terms Vague
In-depth analysis is required to be conducted in a doctorate
level research. A clear and concise focus often produces better and
far-reaching results. Vague terms deviate
the reader’s attention and once the panel looses
the essence of the research while reading it, you would probably get lower
grades.
Following a Set Pattern or Outline
As far as I have noticed, teachers have been telling for years to follow an outline or a standard pattern while conducting your research but that’s totally absurd. What if you’re capable of producing a better dissertation but you are constraining your creativity by listening to the general advice?
I strongly believe that a researcher
at the end of their doctoral degree should start writing whatever triggers in
their minds because the first draft would
highlight areas where you lack and you need improvements in.
Go for it, write it down without any
hesitation and you shall be able to convert it into your very best work later
on!
